Pantanjali created the Yoga Sutras which consists of 8 steps or paths which serves as the structural frame work for practicing yoga. According to Pantanjali when the Eight Limbs of Yoga are practiced, an individual receives the entire benefits of yoga-hence achieving balance in mind, body, & spirit! The 8 steps are not in any sequential order and can be practiced at anytime.
The Eight Limbs or steps to yoga are as follows:
Yama : Universal morality
Niyama : Personal observances
Asanas : Body postures
Pranayama : Breathing exercises, and control of prana
Pratyahara (Prati-ya hara ): Control of the senses
Dharana (Dhaa-rana) : Concentration and cultivating inner perceptual awareness
Dhyana (Dee-ya na) : Devotion, Meditation on the Divine
Samadhi : Union with the Divine

The beauty of practicing yoga is that it builds inner strength which you need to ride life's emotional waves with faith and equanimity even as it tones your body.
One way to build inner strength is by practicing regularly, whether you're feeling inspired or not. That simple act develops your capacity for commitment and for not letting the rest of life get between you and what you know to be essential to your well-being. By being true to yourself in your yoga practice, you enhance your ability to be true to yourself in other situations.
